and Janette had an infection in 2002. Both medical needs were

ARIZONA

Gene and Laraine are a couple in their sixties who have been CHM members since 1994. Gene works as a forensic mechanical engineer and Laraine is an administrative assistant. In 2006, Gene had an aortic aneurysm that required an emergency operation to insert an endoluminal graft (ELG) into his aortic arch. It leaked, leading to another operation. These operations led to related medical complications, numerous doctor appointments and prescriptions with the overall cost totaling more than $170,000 in 2006. Medicare handled the majority of these medical costs, but CHM members shared more than $6,000 that could not be covered through Medicare.

CHM since 1991. Joan works as a realtor. Al was diagnosed with
a pulmonary embolism in December 2005 and was hospitalized for
serious blood clotting in October 2006. He was diagnosed with
lung cancer in January 2007. CHM members have shared all of Al's
qualifying bills. They write, "CHM has been here for us and has
helped us through everything. What a blessing in such critical
times!"

2006. He is self-employed and buys and sells guitars. He also
is an adjunct professor in Ohio. Guy was diagnosed with tongue
cancer in January 2007. He has had 62 radiation treatments and
seven chemotherapy treatments. He has incurred bills for more
than $79,000, but received bill reductions totaling approximately
$36,000.

Paul had a colonoscopy and Dawn went through a pregnancy with
complications. CHM members shared all of the bills for the colonoscopy
and also shared many of the pregnancy bills.
KANSAS

are members. Melissa's husband passed away in 2000. The family
accumulated approximately $250,000 in medical bills during his
battle with cancer. By 2001, CHM members shared all of his bills.
Also, Melissa's daughter, Chloe, nearly drowned in 1996. CHM
members shared her $10,000 in medical bills.
KENTUCKY
Jerry and Jeanette M.

Jerry and Jeanette are in their early seventies and have been
CHM members since 1992. Both serve as ministers. In 2004, Jerry
had an operation for total knee replacement on both knees.

LOUISIANA
Lynda D.

Lynda is in her late fifties and has been a CHM member since 1995. She works in prison ministry and her husband is a residential contractor. In 1999, Lynda was near death with acute pancreatitis. CHM helped her obtain reductions on this bill. She also had major surgery for pancreatic debridement in 1999. Her medical bills were ongoing for several years. With additional help from CHM’s Brother’s Keeper program, CHM members shared all her bills totaling more than $225,000.
MICHIGAN

1991. She is now retired. Her husband had heart surgery in the
mid-1990s and was again in the hospital in 2004. Bills for both
situations were shared by CHM members.

They have been members of CHM since 1994. Bill's first wife died
of cancer in 2003. CHM members shared their medical bills for
two years of testing and treatment.
MINNESOTA

Roger and Melanie are a couple in their forties who have been CHM members since 1992. Roger serves as a pastor and Melanie is a Creative Memories consultant. They have four children (two of them are CHM members). In 2005, Roger had a brain aneurysm rupture that required surgery. CHM helped him obtain a $73,000 reduction on his $108,000 bill! Part of the reduction was applied to Roger’s CHM Personal Responsibility amount, so he paid no out-of-pocket expenses for the procedure. After the reduction, CHM members shared the remaining $35,000.
MISSISSIPPI

Jon and Bjorg have been CHM members since 1998. They both
work as owners of a preschool. Jon was diagnosed with bronchial
cancer. CHM worked with his medical providers and Jon received
a $55,000 reduction on his bills! CHM members then shared the
remaining amount of his bills. CHM members also shared Bjorg's
medical bills for uterine polyps.
OHIO

members since 2004. Gerald serves as a pastor. In 2006, Gerald
had back surgery for a ruptured disc. Through help from CHM,
the hospital and surgeon wrote off the entire amount of the
bills. Also in 2006, Gerald was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy.
He had many tests and medications and had a defibrillator implanted.
Gerald received a reduction from his health care provider and
CHM members shared the remaining balance of his medical bills.
