Health Q&A with Dr. Michael Jacobson, D.O.: Healing of a broken toe

From the September 2018 issue of Heartfelt Magazine.

Q: I believe I broke my small toe about three weeks ago. I buddy taped* it but it’s still sore and feels a little numb. Should I see a doctor or give it longer to heal?

A: It takes six weeks for fractured bones to heal. Buddy taping often suffices for the smaller toes, but if you still have symptoms after three weeks (especially if there is significant pain, swelling, bruising, or disfigurement), consider seeing a doctor.

*Note: Buddy taping involves placing a small piece of gauze between the fractured or sprained toe and an adjacent healthy toe, then taping the two toes together. I recommend using white medical tape and placing a thin strip distal (beyond) and proximal (before) the nearest joint.
